I like how it renders colors on the pentax files better than other things I have tried. I heard silkypix has a more advanced program that can be purchased, I think I looked into it and I'm still interested if it might go in sale again. I realized that it was something that I probably wouldn't use so I didn't pursue learning it the tool. I can't explain the hand held pixel shift because I only used it once and didn't save the file to play around with in the tool. BTW it didn't seem to affect the shadows in any of the shots I tried it on. I did play with the exposure tab you refer to, but since it was identified as handling shadows I didn't think of it as use for highlights. But really the same or opposite can be done for the highlights, you can do the opposite on the curves bar to bring highlights down in dcu using curves.

Lock the curve bar 3/4 of the way up, and 3/4 of the way down pull up the bar and that brings your highlights and shadows up. It has something like low, medium and high for shadows and, you can also bring them up using curves, which is how I usually do it. To bring up shadows, Pentax dcu has a tab, I believe in the exposure tab, that has the same choices as the camera. If I could change it back and forth, maybe by using the third dial, if there was such a way to do that, it might be worth while.Īt least that has always been my personal experience. I use the LCD screen to let me know whether my exposure is in the ball-park, so living with all dark shots would be a nuisance. I believe it forces your k1 to underexpose by about a stop, so you may find your images a little darker when using it but, its very easy to bring exposure back up in post and that usually protects the highlights from blowing. When highlights protection is turned on (instead of auto, because I found auto doesn't always get it right) it really helps keep highlights from blowing out. I try to get my files as close to perfect in camera so I really don't have to do much, if any post processing, which is why I don't mind fiddling in it, plus I like how it renders colors.įirst and best defense for highlights protection is turning that on in the menu of the k1ii. I have the Lightroom 6 which is the last stand-alone system. In regard to lightroom, I've used it for years and get good results from it. I occasionally use dcu and acr (I really dislike lightroom and avoid it and the monthly fee I might be able to help answer your question about dcu and the highlights adjustments.
